When people retire, they often find themselves with ample time to spare and fill with activities. Thankfully, a number of creative hobbies exist for retirees, students during the summer, and people who just have extra time on their hands. Creative hobbies include making ceramics, weaving, gardening, assembling paper crafts, knitting and crocheting.

One of the most popular creative hobbies is creating pottery. Although certain supplies are needed, ceramics continues to gain popularity thanks to its ease. Using a potter's wheel is a great choice, as it grants the sculptor more ease in shaping pots and bowls. However, a potter's wheel is not ultimately necessary for this or other hobbies. To make ceramics in the home, some tools are needed, though, including a needle tool, knife, sponges, rolling pin, spray bottle, plastic bags and clay. Also, an instructional book could help a beginner learn the art of ceramics. Because of the necessary objects needed, pottery tends to be one of the more expensive creative hobbies, especially if potters want to have their creations fired. Firing clay, which makes the creation more permanent and solid, can be done at local ceramics stores, which usually charge money for the process.

Weaving is another of the popular creative hobbies to choose from. Weaving also requires specific tools, but these tools are more durable than many other hobby tools. For instance, whereas potters must continually purchase new sponges and plastic bags, weavers can purchase looms, shuttles and bobbins which last longer than pottery tools. Cloth from looms can be woven into plain patterns or very decorative designs; very intricate and descriptive designs form stunning woven tapestries.

Among creative hobbies, gardening is probably the cheapest. All one needs is dirt in the ground and seeds for planting. Shovels, hoes and rakes could aid in planting, but they are not necessary. Gardening is one of the most popular hobbies because it allows people to work outside with the nature and feel the earth. This hobby also has many forms – from planting beautiful arrays of flowers to nurturing the growth of tomatoes, green beans and other vegetables.

Engaging in the creation of paper crafts can also take many forms. These crafts include hobbies such as scrapbooking and the making of cards, tags, invitations and gift wrap, among other things. These handmade crafts really allow the artist to get creative. Materials can come from art supply stores, magazines or even common newspapers. The person then draws all of these objects together to create a truly unique piece of art. For those who need a little help, publications, such as Paper Crafts Magazine, can provide helpful hints about these hobbies.

Knitting and crocheting are additional ideas for creative hobbies. Knitting and crocheting can produce amazing articles of clothing, such as hats and scarves. They can also create fun and useful objects for around the house, such as a cover for an Ipod. Hooks are needed for crocheting, while needles remain necessary for knitting. Yarn or thread is used to create the final results.

Spending time doing creative hobbies is a much better way to spend time then sitting around watching TV. Choosing any one of these hobbies is a great idea for a person of any age.
