Even with all the technology in today's world, going back to the basics can have a huge payoff. In art especially, the talent of working with simpler materials leaves more to the artists imagination. For those considering a new hobby, paper crafts may be the way to go. They allow easy use and do not demand much in terms of monetary means. Paper crafts are a great way to involve the whole family or occupy oneself for the day.

The art of paper crafts encompasses a wide array of projects. Papier mache, origami, scrapbooking, 3D decoupage, collage and card making, just to name a few, are great ways to involve oneself with a project without committing too much. It is easy to learn any one of these paper crafts. Art stores offer classes, there are books for purchase explaining how to do any number of paper crafts, and the Internet is a great source for discovering new ideas.

The tools necessary for a hobby in paper crafts are going to vary according to the project at hand, but the basics are simple to use and easy to find. All of the materials can be found at an arts and crafts store. A self-healing cutting mat is handy because it remains smooth even after cutting and prevents the surface from getting messy. Cutting instruments, such as a craft knife, scissors or profession paper cutters, are necessary to create paper crafts.

A straight edge, such as a metal ruler, will ensure perfect lines are made. For projects that require creasing, such as dollar origami, a bone folder or stylus will give a crease without leaving residue or ruin the texture. Other tools that will help in paper crafts endeavors include a pencil, glue stick or double stick tape, black ink pads, stamps, stamp cleaner, and embossing powder and heat gun. Miscellaneous props, such as stencils and sponges, can be found and used as well.

When constructing paper crafts, it is important to keep safety in mind. Something such as 3D decoupage or scrapbooking involves a lot of cutting and pasting and if someone is not careful, cuts can occur as well as gluing things together that are not meant to be glued. Safety is especially an issue when doing paper crafts with children. Do not use instant papier mache with kids, instead use newspaper and white paste. Also, avoid adhesives that are not water-based and any organic solvents. Paper crafts are meant to be fun, not dangerous.

Whether helping a child with his or her collage or creating ones own dollar origami, these are a few tips to keep in mind and a few tools to keep at hand. Who needs the latest and most advanced art technology when classic paper will do? The creations are endless with a little innovation and know how. Drop the remote and get out to the crafts store!
